Preemie Crochet Hat

A few weeks ago after searching and searching I couldn't find just a simple baby hat that I could crochet. The patterns that I was finding on Pinterest were either too girly, had too many different stitches or just time consuming. So I made up my own pattern. This pattern (for the preemie size) only has 8 rounds so it works up pretty fast and it uses simple double crochet with just one round of decreasing.
Let me know if there are any mistakes in the pattern.

Supplies:
  • Caron Simply Soft or similar yarn.
  • Size H crochet hook

Abbreviations:
dc - double crochet
dc2tog - double crochet 2 together (decrease)
sc - single crochet

Pattern:
Round 1: Chain 5. 15 dc in 5th chain from hook, join with slip stitch.
[Begin working in back loops only]

Round 2: Chain 2, 1 dc in same stitch as chain, 2 dc in each stitch to end, join with slip stitch.

Round 3-4: Chain 2, *1 dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat around, join with slip stitch.

Round 5-6: Chain 2, 1 dc in each stitch to end, join with slip stitch.

Round 7: Chain 2, *dc2tog in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch* repeat around, join with slip stitch.

Round 8: Chain 2, 1 sc in each stitch to end, join with slip stitch.
Fasten Off.

Beautiful picture!!! As I am normally using patterns in German, please explain step 1 for me - I understand the following rounds, but did not get the clue of starting...

Hi Andrea,
For the first step you start with 5 chain stitches, then you do 15 double crochets in the first chain stitch that you made. Does that help?

Thanks for the pattern. I just made it. Very easy to follow.

Is round supposed to be an invrease? I worked it as double crochet instead of an increaae and it turned out great but as an increase the hat looked like a beret.

From Portugal, thanks for another wonderful pattern!
I have been crocheting, knitting and sewing since I was about 8 years old. Everything I do is either for friends who ask me or for charity. I use every spare minute to crochet and everywhere I go, I take my crochet bag with me.
Much love to all

Can you help? Iam trying to find the crown width of preemie babies from 30 weeks right down to 40 weeks gestational age to make a variety of beanie sizes for charity.using the crown width size formula.

This is in response to Unknown who is trying to find the crown width of preemie babies. I do not have the exact answer, but the average crown width for a newborn is 3.5 inches. If possible use single crochet instead of double crochets when making the crown or use a smaller hook. I hope this gives you an idea how to proceed as preemie babies of the same gestational age do not have the same size of head. A wonderful thing you are doing for charity.
